Can I apply a ceramic coating by myself?
For the best results, have your ceramic coating applied by professionals like Gateway Auto Detail. Their expertise ensures even coverage and proper surface preparation, which are critical for a long-lasting bond. Attempting it yourself without the right experience or conditions may lead to poor results and higher costs due to potential reapplication.
What surfaces can ceramic coating be applied to?
Ceramic coatings can be applied to paint, trim, glass, lights, wheels, leather and fabric. Each coating is surface specific for proper adhesion and protection
What if my paint has scratches?
While ceramic coating can be applied to vehicles with existing scratches, it is important to note that it won't fill or repair these imperfections. Ceramic coatings create a hard layer over the paint, enhancing appearance and protection. For the best results, it's recommended to address any scratches with paint correction before applying the coating. This ensures a smooth, flawless finish, allowing the coating to truly enhance your vehicle's appearance. At Gateway Auto Detail, our team will assess your vehicle’s condition and recommend the necessary surface preparations for optimal results.
How long does the application take?
The process of ceramic coating will take between 1-3 days depending on the condition of your paint, the size of the vehicle and the packages you select. The 1st step is to wash and prep the vehicle. The 2nd step is to correct all the imperfections in the paint such as swirls and scratches. Once the vehicle is properly prepped, a body shop safe prep solvent will be applied to the entire vehicle to get to bare paint. At this stage the coating process will begin, and each panel of the vehicle will have ceramic applied, leveled, and stacked to achieve the package you have selected.
Will ceramic protect me from rock chips?
Ceramic is a Silica based product, meaning it is a “glass” coating. Ceramic adds some rock chip resistance, but it can still get rock chips from larger stones and high speeds. The glass windshield on your vehicle will still get rock chips, just much less often than your clearcoat.
I just coated my vehicle, how long until I can wash it?
You should wait 14 days before the 1st wash to allow the solvents to outgas and fully cure. If you notice that your car gets water spots, bird droppings, tree sap etc. during these two weeks immediately remove it following our care instructions. Keep in mind the coating is softer during the 14 days so work on the paint very gently.
How We Apply Ceramic Coatings at Gateway Auto Detail
The application process can be very tedious to do without help, that is why Gateway Auto Detail is here to take care of that for you! Gateway Auto Detail also knows that adequate preparation is critical for a long-lasting coating on top of having the right equipment. That is why before every application, we make sure to understand everything about your car. The first step is to resolve the car’s paint. We spend a lot of time correcting a vehicle’s exterior before applying the ceramic coat. When needed, we perform paint correction and address any minor scratches, unwanted marks, and faded paint on the surface before applying. The vehicle’s surface must be perfect before applying the base coat as the imperfections will be very hard to correct after the application of the first layer.
Maintaining Ceramic Coatings
For maintaining ceramic coatings we recommend you wash your car regularly utilizing a hand wash. Ceramic coatings on your vehicle require at least once a month maintenance for maximum protection, effectiveness, and an enhanced gloss finish. We do not recommend you take your car through a tunnel car wash system as it will put swirl marks in the ceramic coating and ruin the paint job as well as integrity of the coating itself. Instead we advise using a (Touchless) car wash or come to us for maintenance washing. We do not recommend you take your car through a tunnel car wash system as it will put swirl marks on the coating.
